 "Passages: Women In Transition" - 9th Annual Women's History Month Film Festival - Opening with "The Rape of Recy Taylor," and featuring "Mama Africa: Miriam Makeba..." This year we're honoring Antoinette Montague, Patricia Faison, Ellen Lambert, Celia King, Miryam Torres, Dr. Rochelle Hendricks and Nettie Thomas and presenting the Antoinette Montague Experience in concert.

How do we define transitions, much the same as Merriam-Webster, as “the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another.” This exhibition attempts to examine the ways in which transitions or the state of transitioning impacts the works of women artists. These transitions are inclusive of, but not limited to gender identity transition, transition to motherhood, transition in aging, transition in work, transition through loss, transition in grief, transition in death.

Each year Women In Media - Newark presents an exhibition of works by visual artists that coincides with their annual film festival. This year's theme is Women in Transition. We invite you to submit work through open call to Newark-based artists for consideration in Transitions, this year's exhibition at Paul Robeson Campus Center Gallery, Rutgers University - Newark.

Black Woman in Visual Perspective

When: October 10th-13th, 2019

Media: Watercolor ~ Size: 48"x35" | Description: Four female figures representative of different racial groups in varied pulling positions, viewed through the transparency of the African fertility symbol, the akuba, and the biological symbol for the female sex.Summary

BLACK WOMAN IN VISUAL PERSPECTIVE, a historical group of black professional female artists, established in 1972 was the inspiration of  GLADYS BARKER GRAUER. The group remained active through their 10th, 15th, and 20th year anniversaries.
In recognition of the founder, Gladys Barker Grauer, receiving the 2019 “Women’s Caucus For The Arts Lifetime Achievement Award," this exhibit will highlight the art of some of the surviving current members. It will also serve as a memoriam to her life and art in which she inspired provocation by making a difference.

Summary

The Civil Rights Exhibit depicts aspects of past and current civil rights struggles and the experiences of people of color in this country. The works exhibited are literal and conceptual interpretations of civil rights in America.
